Teaching Children how to Look up Scriptures

Friday, June 11th, 2010

We are taking on the challenge of teaching the children in our department how to use their Bibles this summer. I’ve been very disturbed in recent years to watch kids at camp and other places take up to 5 minutes to find a scripture verse in their Bible. WHen I was a child, we would have Sword Drills. Some of my friends could find scriptures in a metter of seconds. Children today go to the Table of Contents to find the page number of the book. They don’t have any idea where a particular book of the Bible is located … not even whether it’s in the New or Old Testament. So we are trying to change this, at least with our small group of children. Here’s a fun idea I came up with for our children. A Bible Treasure Hunt! The clues were all found in scripture verses. I told the children they could not use the Table of Contents.

Make index cards with scripture verses that have the next clue. Place the next clue on the front of the next index card and the following scripture reference on the back.

Index card #1 (to be given to the children) – Luke 12:34

Index card #2 (found in a treasure chest)

[front] “where Your treasure is” [back] Judges 5:3

Index card #3 (found on the keyboard or piano)

[front] “make music” [back] Exodus 40:14

Index card #4 (found in the costume closet/box)

[front] “dress in tunics” [back] Matthew 6:19

Index card #5 (found in the storage closet)

[front] “store up” [back] 2 Corinthians 4:7

INdex card #6 (found in a clay pot)

[front] “jars of clay” [back] Psalm 90:12

Index card #7 (found on the calendar)

[front] “number our days” [back] Proverbs 16:9

Index card #8 (found near the stairs)

[front] “steps” [back] Genesis 2:9

Index Card #9 (found in a ficus tree)

[front] ‘tree’ [back] Revelations 3:20

Index Card #10 (found on a door)

[front] “stand at the door” [back] Psalm 23:5

Index Card # 11 (found on a table. I placed a cooler of ice cream on the table)

[front] ‘prepare a table before me’ [back] Psalm 35:8

Index Card #12 (found in the cooler)

[front] ‘o, taste and see’

Treat Time!

I.N.C. W.E.L.L.S.

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I.N.C. W.E.L.L.S. are not those bottles of ink on your desk that the boy behind you used to dip your pigtail in. Rather, I.N.C. W.E.L.L.S are Incredible Nazarene Children’s Workers Enlisted to Lead Love and Serve

Here’s a picture of some of the most incredible workers I have ever known!

And here’s the beautiful flowers they gave me for my birthday.

And I wish you could read all the wonderful birthday cards the kids made me. They are on my office bulletin board! I love Moultrie’s I.N.C. (Incredible Nazarene Children)

Aren’t you jealous?

One Size Fits All?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Have you seen these t-shirts that say one size fits all? Isn’t that a oximoron? Take a look at that shirt and you will soon summize that you know someone that would get swallowed up in the shirt and equally you know someone that would be hard pressed to get the shirt on! This is how some of us are having to teach our Sunday School classes and Children’s church.

While large super churches seem to be popping up everywhere, there are still thousands of little churches around the nation and the world that are reaching people for Christ. This inevitably presents the problem of having one teacher and 8-10 children ranging from age 3 to 12. Mostly likely, there is a big age gap right in the middle of this. So what’s a teacher to do?

Where in the World is that?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Well it’s been awhile since I gave any Bible quizzing tidbits of information. I’ve been wanting to share some places to find a good map of Israel so that you can show the children where Joshua and the Israelites are.

First of all, I hope that you bought the extra posters from the publishing house. We are finding them most helpful, especially the map. I got it laminated so that it will stay nice all year.

If you have access to a computer in your classroom, you may find these websites very useful. My daughter learned about this totally awesome map site in her home school Bible class. You type in the book and chapter you are reading and it shows a map of the area, highlighting all the places mentioned. Isn’t that way cool? www.biblemap.org

Another great Bible geography site is http://www.bible-history.com/maps/

Bible Gateway is an excellent place for looking up scriptures. With the click of the mouse you can choose literally any version or translation you like. I love this for Bible study or further understanding since you can see what it says in several translations instantly. Sometimes this can open up a new world to you. www.biblegateway.com

Well, that’s it for now. Hope this helps someone out there!

Christmas Program for Small Churches

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Last year I offered one of my Christmas plays to small churches with small budgets. I could not believe the requests that I received. My generosity is still strong, but this year I found a way to get the play to people more easily. So I offer it to you again. BUT FIRST, please add my e-mail address to you e-mail address book or white list ( mandy@thefarmersplace.com )

Soccer Day

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

We had a great Friday this week! Our theme was “Exercise”.

1) Needed for physical health

2) Exercising Your Faith is needed for spiritual health.

We learned how to share our faith by using the wordless book. The wordless book has a 6 pages displaying only a color. The color reminds us of a portion of the Gospel story. Here it is in case you haven’t heard it before …

BLACK – Sin

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

RED – The Blood of Jesus

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 “God demonstrates His love for us in this, while we were yet sinners Christ dies for us.”

BLUE – Faith/Believe

Galatians 2:16 “We become right with God, not by doing what the law commands, but by faith in Jesus Christ.”

WHITE – God’s Forgiveness (Our sins are gone!)

Psalm 51:7 ” Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.”

GREEN – Grow in the Lord

2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the special favor and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

YELLOW/GOLD – Heaven (Street of Gold)

John 14:2-3 “I am going to prepare a place for you … when everything is ready I will come and get you.

After learning the Gospel Story, we headed to the YMCA for some exercise and soccer fun. Coach Mike Wallace and his volunteers were great! We learned to dribble, pass, and shoot the soccer ball. At the end of the day, everyone received a Gospel soccer ball with all the colors of the gospel story.

A Fabulous Friday was had by all!

Fabulous Friday

Friday, July 10th, 2009

After all the prayer and preparation, we launched the First Fabulous Friday of the year! Our Bible Boot Camp is all about Growing in the Lord.

This week we have talked about prayer. We are learning to actually have a conversation with God rather then just throwing a memorized prayer God’s way. We are using the Lord’s Prayer as our example. Mrs. Pat built a beautiful prayer path to help us along our way. I am amazed at how the children find it helpful. HOpefully, the adults at church will use the prayer path as well.
